A UAE visa does not lapse quietly on its own. Until it is formally cancelled, your quota stays locked and fines accrue. Here is how to close it properly.
Visa cancellation is the least glamorous part of UAE company administration and the one that most often comes back to bite people. The assumption that a visa simply expires and disappears is wrong, and discovering that at the point your next visa application is rejected is an expensive way to learn it. Why it matters Your company visa quota stays consumed until the visa is cancelled. The sponsor company remains legally liable for the individual. Overstay fines accrue daily once the visa expires uncancelled. An open record commonly blocks the individual from a new UAE visa. Labour bans can apply where the contract is closed incorrectly Employee visa cancellation The sequence matters. Get it out of order and you start again. Cancel the labour contract and work permit with MoHRE or the free zone authority. Cancel the residence visa with immigration. Cancel the Emirates ID. Collect the official cancellation paper. Confirm the grace period in writing Investor / partner visa cancellation An investor visa is tied to your shareholding, not an employment contract. If you are exiting the company entirely, the share transfer has to be filed alongside the cancellation. If you are keeping the company and simply cancelling your own visa, it is simpler — but the establishment card must still be updated. What you need Original passport. Original Emirates ID. Company trade licence and establishment card. Signed cancellation request from the sponsor. Labour card copy (employee visas) The grace period Once cancelled, a grace period applies during which you must either exit the UAE or transfer to a new sponsor. It is commonly 30 days, but it varies by visa type and current regulations — do not rely on what a friend was told two years ago. Get it confirmed in writing at cancellation. Overstaying beyond the grace period triggers daily fines and can affect future entry to the UAE. Can you transfer instead of leaving? Yes. If a new sponsor files your visa within the grace period, you can transfer in-country without exiting — provided the new employer completes their side in time. That "in time" caveat does real work; new employers routinely underestimate it. Do you need to be in the UAE? Not always. Cancellation can often be processed while you are outside the country, though your original passport and Emirates ID are required. If you have already left and taken your documents with you, say so upfront — it changes the process. The most common mistake Assuming that closing the company cancels the visas. It does not — it is the other way around. You cannot deregister a company with active visas attached to it. Visas come down first, then the licence.
